10 Young People Who Changed the Internet

UPDATED : Please click here to read the revised version of “People Who Changed the Internet”

Some Internet marketers might be telling you how much they make and how hard they work to achieve such status. But do you realize there a bunch of people out there who make more money than these Internet marketers. These people are considered to invent parts of the Internet. I even believed that Internet wouldn’t be as popular as today without these guys.

So here goes the 10 persons that I wish I wanted to be in one day. :-p

1. Larry Page and Sergey Brin

Invented Google when they were just 24 years old in 1998. Started in a garage as their first “office”, this two people inspired thousands of youngsters to make money online. Larry and Sergey then created a multi-billion company that rocks the Internet.

2. Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook, Facebook, Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard University student invented Facebook as a social network platform of teenagers in colleges when he was just 19 years old. Facebook is now the second largest social network website to MySpace. However, please be aware that Facebook is growing day by day, with millions of new users signing up every month!

Update: It is said that Zuckerberg stole the Facebook’s source code and ideas from 3 of his Harvard classmates. Hmm…

3. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen

The inventors of the “online video sharing” website, YouTube. YouTube is then acquired by Google for $1.65 billion. And they founded YouTube in 2005 when Chad were 28 years old and Steve were 27 years old.

4. Jerry Yang and David Filo

These two guys invented Yahoo!, the closest search engine rival to Google. These two guys are probably the hottest people in the news now, after Microsoft launched a $44.6 billion bid to buy out Yahoo!. Jerry was 26 years old and David Filo was 28 years old when both of them created Yahoo!. Yahoo! was founded in 1995.

5. Matt Mullenweg

Matt Mullenweg was only 19 years old when he created a widely used blogging platform. He founded WordPress blogging platform in 2005, and the blogosphere literally evolved. People started to move from MovableType and other platform to WordPress due to WordPress’ ease of usage and frequent updates and improvements.

6. Tom Anderson

Created world’s #1 social network with over 100 million users, Tom Anderson founded MySpace when he was only 23 years old in year 2004. He might not be as rich in net worth compared to Mark Zuckerberg, but he is considered the founder of widely used social network on the Internet.

Update: I just found out that Tom Anderson is not the founder of MySpace. Thanks to those who enlighten me. :-) Sorry for the trouble.

7. Pierre Omidyar

Aha, the founder of eBay. Pierre Omidyar founded eBay, the world wide online auction when he was just 28 years old in 1995. Since then, a lot of people have appreciate his invention, thus pushing eBay to a world wide platform.

8. Blake Ross

Blake Ross founded Mozilla when he was just 19 years old in 2003. Since then, Mozilla have grow huge, luring more Internet users to their own Mozilla Firefox browser which proves more user-friendly than most web browsers.

9. Kevin Rose

Kevin Rose founded Digg when he was just 27 years old in 2004. I remembered watching this guy hosting and talking on some tech TV show.

10. Gottfrid Svartholm

Gottfrid founded The Pirate Bay when he was 24 years old in 2004. The Pirate Bay received a lot of controversial comments from every corner, but Internet users still enjoy the experience of using The Pirate Bay.

    What about Sir Tim Berners-Lee?

Non of them could be what they are now if not because of Tim Berners-Lee, no?

Not all of this information is actually correct.

For instance, myspace was founded by an advertising agency and was designed so they can sell advertising space while competiting with Friendster.

Tom was just used to make it seem more friendly and personal.

Tom Anderson did not create Myspace.com.

Hmm… only Tom didn’t really invent myspace… that was all marketing. It was an advertising agency known for adware and spyware that invented MySpace, marketed it by sending emails to their huge email lists, and then later ‘invented’ the story of Tom to make the entire thing sound more ‘web 2.0′

Actualy, myspace was founded by a team of people from eUniversal. The project was overseen by Brad Greenspan, who managed Chris DeWolfe, Josh Berman, Tom Anderson, and as well as others. Even considering him as the founder is a vast overstatement.

    Hi guys,

Creeper - Apparently, we can’t say much about Zuckerberg because of so many court cases going against him. But we will just look at him as the youngest billionaire.

Sikarong - Haha…chill dude… I worked another post like this to update everything up.

Everyone - sorry for so many mistakes

Another quick correction: Blake Ross was the cocreator of Firefox, but he did not found Mozilla. Mozilla has been around since 1998 (1994 if you count the period when it was a closed-source project owned by Netscape). Mozilla employed Ross while he was in high school, and while he was there he helped start Firefox.

    These guy’s didn’t change internet.
Most of them just succeeded making money on things already knowed.
At most some of them changed they way how some people use the internet.

The one that really changed the net was Tim Berner-Lee.
He invented the WWW and http, so without him we all would be using a black and white terminal, and would surfe only using commando lines.

Tim Berners-Lee definitely is the one that changes the technology today.

But this post is on 10 young people, not 10 people. SO, Tim Berners-Lee is a little bit too old now. :-)

But I really value his contribution

Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from friends who hired him to set up the software for the site. See Below

“Three former Harvard classmates of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will face him in Massachusetts district court next week, claiming for a second time that the social networking site’s original development team stole the idea and source code for Facebook after Zuckerberg worked for them in 2003.

The dispute began when Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook.com in February 2004, a month after promising to help finish the Web site for the Harvard Connection, now ConnectU, according to a complaint filed in April 2007 by the three plaintiffs in the case — classmates Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra. As early as November 2003, the three ConnectU founders had discussed the possibility of working on the Harvard Connection Web site with Zuckerberg, the court filing stated.

This is the second time around for the lawsuit. A previous court action was dismissed due to a technicality on March 28, and ConnectU’s founders immediately filed a refurbished complaint, according to Conde Nast’s Portfolio.com. With Facebook currently valued at as much as $2 billion, the stakes of the lawsuit have risen dramatically in the past three years. “

@Kost — I’m a fan of all his shows too and found out he started Digg when he said something about it on Diggnation. If not for that, i probably wouldn’t have even taken a second look at Digg.
